TMJ Pain
Temporomandibular joint disorder is a disorder in the temporomandibular joint and the muscles that control your jaw movement. 85% of Americans experience symptoms in their lives.
The joint is situated on both sides of your head, in front of your ears where your lower jaw bone meets your skull. Overuse of this joint is often caused by bruxism, stress or teeth grinding and can all lead to pain and inflammation.
TMJ may show symptoms in the face with facial swelling, headaches, neck and shoulder pain and tired facial muscles. This can all be helped with massage therapy.
Major symptoms of this of TMJ often include:
– Jaw pain or stiffness
– Discomfort while chewing
– Locking of the jaw which makes it difficult to open or close the jaw
– Clicking/popping/grating sounds with jaw movement which may or may not be painful
What to Expect.
During a TMJD massage a client can come in and expect the massage to be mostly clothed except the top torso and will be worked on laying mostly on your back. The head, neck, shoulders, chest and face will all be massaged.
MAT work can be expected at the time of the massage, and essential oils are also used to calm the nervous system and relieve stress.
